The Ozone Hole Could Heal in Our Lifetimes, UN Reports

~ the pondering muse🌙

With all the bad news happening in the last few months surrounding our planet from climate change satellites deployment being halted and then ordered destroyed to the fact that we may have only a few decades to prevent total catastrophic collapse, we tend to miss the good things. So, here’s a list of some amazing victories.

– The Ozone will be completely healed by 2060.

– Biodegradable plastics are becoming popular.

– Solarpunk & Lunarpunk communities are thriving.

– Communities are starting to talk about climate change and adaptation and putting it into action.  transitionnetwork.org/

– Co-op’s are popping up for everything.

– Extinction Rebellion is calling for massive change to save our planet.

– Spain wants to cut 90% of carbon by 2050.

– Scotland’s Wind Turbines generated 98% of it’s energy demands.

–  We can sue the government over climate change.

– Elephants are adapting to poaching by not developing tusks.

This is just a small list of the amazing things we have done together as solarpunks, lunarpunks, and communities (not to mention the animals that are adapting). If I was to keep a log, I would be constantly adding new things to this list on a daily basis and wouldn’t be able to keep up with it all. No matter how dark and bleak our futures may seem, what’s a little darkness to Lunarpunks? We all can and will thrive. Don’t loose hope. Keep pushing for a better tomorrow and a better today. It can and it is slowly taking shape.

so in 2007, there was a law passed that said if you have student loans
and you worked in public services & made student loan payments on time
for 10 years, you’d get loan forgiveness. fast forward to 2017, and guess what happens under this admin with Betsy Devos?

out of 30,000 public service applicants, the Devos/Trump team only forgave the loans of 96 people. imagine 10 years ago deciding to work in public service with shitty pay to pay off loans the govt promised they would and then 99% of applications get rejected. thats absolutely despicable. wtf.

couldn’t post the links since this website is hell and won’t let it show up in searches anymore, but here’s the links. apparently there IS a class-action lawsuit going, and here’s a link to a petition being done by the same union who filed the lawsuit (it’s at the bottom). not sure how much it’s helpful but it’s worth a shot i guess

here’s a link to the article

It’s called the foot-in-the-door method. First, you propose something that is slightly outside of allowable norms: denying gay people wedding cakes on grounds of “religious freedom”. Then, you slowly ramp up how extreme your demands are, coercing the other side to giving a tiny bit of ground each time, until you’ve shifted the entire fucking playing field. Conservatives are also very fond of the door-to-face method, which is demanding something completely outlandish that you know will be refused, and then asking for something less ridiculous by way of compromise, again resulting in a gradual shift in norms until views that were once considered moderate or reasonable become unthinkably liberal by destroying people’s sense of standards. The combination of these methods is called the “foot-in-the-face” method, which sums up where this whole thing is headed quite nicely.

Thank you for posting this.  I was arguing with a relative who had taken the “I don’t think you should NOT make cakes for gays, but why not just go to a vendor that will happily sell to you” stance and I couldn’t quite explain why this was still a bad idea.  This sums it up perfectly and correctly.

i’m so sick of arguing with canadians. their delusional brand of “at least we’re not american” patriotism is probably one of the reasons why social change is so fucking slow to pass in this country

like, american activists and community organizers are excellent at mobilizing towards common goals and their outreach to the wider public is so much greater especially in recent years because people acknowledge that there are problems. people work towards reducing them. americans of colour have been leading social change everywhere and people focus on tackling root problems despite the scary political climate. if anything, the political climate serves as a good motivator for even white people and mild liberals to listen up and try to make life better for everyone–how many americans have been educating themselves and going out to protests and joining community movements in the past years? (it’s another question whether they will continue showing up but the point is that more people are listening to leaders of colour and the midterm elections were just some evidence of that)

social change in canada is a nightmare because this infatuation with comparing everything to america. everyone focuses on american news, everyone laughs at trump’s statements, everyone flicks on the tv and goes “at least we’re not american!”

no one listens to indigenous people. no one listens to canadians of colour. no one cares about our communities, our immigration issues, the rising popularity of racist and fascist hate groups, the high suicide rates in indigenous communities, the mainstreaming of further and further right-wing ideologies in our governments.

because “at least we’re not american,” right? i’m finding it harder and harder to come across people who actually know what trudeau has been up to these past years because nobody thinks it’s as important as following the events to the south of the border as if it’s some exciting drama we have to keep up with.

this weird trend of political voyeurism is a perfectly convenient way to ignore local issues and it’s really getting in the way of our ability to move towards any positive change in this country

yes, there are those who are working hard towards positive goals and are trying to spread awareness of the things i mentioned, but what good is it if everyone just washes their hands of responsibility after voting “liberal” and pretend that everything is okay? that because you can’t see through the smokescreen of canadian “progressiveness” you can’t see that there is so much to be done?

basically emotional manipulation and guilt tripping as social justice praxis is pointless and not sustainable imo. it doesn’t promote real growth or solidarity if the entire basis of your activism is stemming from guilt or fear

it’s also worth pointing out that it turns “social justice” into something uncomfortably like religion. it establishes patterns of behavior that you’re expected to follow, not necessarily because you understand them or agree with them, but because you are afraid of the consequences if you don’t. it turns communities of “activists” into self-aggrandizing moralistic pissing contests, where the pecking order is defined by who knows more of the rules, and who is more willing to enforce them on others (usually, by any means necessary). it encourages ideological purity and discourages debate, discussion, education, and subsequent individual and community growth.

‪This will be our new lives if capitalism continues to exist‬

Just so you all know, the fire was likely caused by a private electric company, that essentially has a monopoly here, and could have been prevented if they shut off power in that area for only a few hours.

They chose not to because they wanted to maximize profit potential. This was more important to them than the entire town of Paradise.

No Corporation is your friend. No Corporation will ever care about the good of others unless it is profitable to do so.

I live here and I can verify the statement above and add that this is PG&E’s fault and that they’ve lobbied against much need infrastructure upgrades.

hey friends, if you care about cultural appropriation and the damage it causes, please check out this awesome project!

in 2017 dior copied the design of a traditional romanian coat from the county of bihor and sold it for 30,000 euro, giving no credit to the local artisans. in response, romanian fashion magazine beau monde helped the community create their own brand, bihor couture, which sells the original coat, handmade to order, for 500 euro a piece. they also sell other traditional clothing and jewelry for much more accessible prices (5-45 euro). they’ve been hugely successful so far, and currently have enough pre-orders to cover 4.5 years of work, with 100% of the profits returning to the community.

it’s surprisingly common for big name fashion designers like dior, gaultier, tom ford and altuzarra to copy traditional romanian clothing and sell it for ridiculous prices, with minimal original input, while giving nothing back to the community where these designs originated. it’s completely unfair that a big name designer can just steal so much hard work and misuse it to make huge profits.

please support bihor couture, if not by ordering one of their products, then by spreading the news around. it’s really awesome to see a small community fight back against cultural appropriation so successfully. i hope they carry on for a long time!

We are very interested in purchasing…. maybe in 5 years when they’re open for new orders :’)
